Alternately titled Shadow of the Past, the Wild West drama Painted Hero (1996) tells of a pro rodeo clown trying to climb back in the saddle. Country superstar Dwight Yoakam stars as Virgil, a low-talking, denim-sporting bad boy who returns to his hometown to discover that he’s anything but welcome. With the sheriff already breathing down his neck over some reckless bronco riding, Virgil finds himself tagged as the lead suspect in an ex-girlfriend’s murder. Fortunately Terry L. Benedict’s film isn’t strictly about Stetson-wearing hayseeds; Michelle Joyner and Kiersten Warren whoop it up as cowgirls with a talent for riding the range.
