Shy guy Thomas Newton has an intriguing new pair of neighbors, but his attempts to break out of his shell land him in hell in Lying in Wait (2000). The next-door no-goodniks are Rutger Hauer and Virginia Madsen, and at first they seem to be a dream come true—Virginia is gregarious and gorgeous, and Rutger is the confident kind of guy Thomas could never be. But things aren't going well in the couple's relationship, and Thomas realizes that something's afoot. After a big blowout, the duo crashes their car, leaving Rutger in a serious rut; he's wheelchair-bound and unable to communicate. As Thomas gets closer to guilt-addled Virginia, people close to Rutger begin dropping dead in mysterious ways. Is Virginia to blame, or is Rutger awake and playing games?
