Gil Junger transports the Bard to a contemporary American high school in the hit teen comedy 10 Things I Hate About You (1999), a witty revamping of The Taming of the Shrew. The plot hews close to Shakespeare’s original, with Larisa Oleynik playing the affable Bianca, whose life is made difficult by dad’s edict that she not be allowed to date until her misanthropic older sister (Julia Stiles) finds a boy. Joey (Andrew Keegan) is so gaga for Bianca that he’s happy to hook Kat (Stiles) up with an enigmatic newbie (Heath Ledger), clearing a path to the delectable younger sister. PG-13 constraints keep Junger’s film from being as bawdy as a production at the Globe Theatre, but Oleynik and Stiles manage to look alluring even when clothed.
