Catholics and Protestants have not always been the easy bedfellows of our secular, church-scoffing society. Back in Paris in August 1572, the setting and time explored to spectacularly lustful and murderous effect in Queen Margot (1994), people took their religion seriously. Everyone from the bootblack in the street to the queen in her bridal chamber bowed to the will of their priests and presbyters, praying an allegiance to denomination that eventually led to political intrigue, the sexuality of convenience, distrust, discrimination, and--on the unholy night of the Saint Bartholomew's Day Massacre--the wholesale slaughter by worshipful Catholics of several thousand heathen Protestants.
