Review

Religion gets satirized in Jesus of Montreal (1989), a movie about the production of a controversial Passion play in which the characters start living out their roles. The boldness of director Denys Arcand in having the actual play take up much of the midsection of his movie is both brave and satisfying in showing just how revolutionary the teachings of Christ are. It's a compassionate take on the gospel from a filmmaker more renowned for his cynicism. That he also has one of his Passion play players, Catherine Wilkening, show off some boob is enlightening. Too bad he didn't have her turn the other cheek, though.
