Christian Slater is Dr. Watson to Sean Connery's Sherlock Holmes in The Name of the Rose (1986), a Dark Ages, religious whodunit about murder in a Benedictine Abbey. This movie has it all: a succession of murders that appear the work of the Devil, the infamous Inquisition and even Valentina Vargas as a horny peasant good-time girl to the "celibate" monks. Slater gets tempted from the faith thanks to Valentina's exorcism of his holy rod from his tattered habit. This rose is a hothouse flower of romance.
