Biding their time before Oscar-winning comebacks, Jack Palance and Martin Landau are escapees from an insane asylum looking for revenge on nice-guy psychiatrist Dwight Schultz in Alone in the Dark (1982). This leads to an impressive Assault on Precinct 13 (1976)-style siege on the doc’s suburban home during a blackout. There are lots of inventive characters and chilling moments in this acclaimed slasher sleeper, with Donald Pleasance especially fun as a hippie headshrinker who refuses to condemn the “voyagers” in his care. The token nudity and babysitter-in-distress angle are also innovative, with Carol Levy providing chills and chubbies. That knife popping up between her legs prompted some controversy, though.
