A warped Mexican adventure to rival Alejandro Jodorowsky’s celluloid hallucinations, the surreal film Deseos (1977) is the brainchild of cinematic eccentric Rafael Corkidi. The tenuous plot tells of an aimless wanderer who returns to his village after a near-apocalyptic disaster. There the traveler is treated to indelible images of mutilation, defecation, and anti-religious extremism. It’s pretty bleak stuff, but co-stars Elpidia Carrillo, Angelica Chain, and Ana Luisa Peluffo help to pretty up the situation with a series of ravishing reveals.
