By the start of the ’70s, even the major studios were willing to invest in adaptations of notorious “dirty books.” Rising young stars were also happy to show up in decadent displays like Tropic of Cancer (1970), a take on Henry Miller’s classic novel. There’s not much plot as Rip Torn--playing Miller--and his pals hang around Paris and try to get laid. They’re also interested in art and finding the occasional meal, but they’ve got their priorities straight. Ellen Burstyn--billed here as “Ellen McRae”--helps to keep a lot of things straight by burstyn out of her clothes. Magali Noël provides some local flavor while keeping a virtual Eiffel Tower tearing out of Torn’s pants.
