Following the tragic early death of her sister, a German architect is plagued by feelings of remorse in the soapy German melodrama Umwege des Herzens (2001). Despite early professional successes, Sarah ( Sonja Kirchberger) now finds herself saddled with debt and feelings of guilt over the death of her sister, Susanne (Jenny Schilly). Because she can’t go back in time and offer an organ donation, Sarah decides to seek out her sister’s family on a mission of self-sacrifice. Kirchberger, an impossibly foxy Austrian, handles this weeper with consummate skill, but it’s her love scene with Jochen Nickel that really sets the heart racing.
