An emotionally fragile young man uses a portable video camera to follow his sister’s every move in the experimental Dutch drama Zusje (1996). Martijn (Romijn Conen) has an unorthodox and weirdly disturbing relationship with his sister Daantje (Kim van Kooten). Not only is he obsessed with filming every waking minute of her days, he’s also in possession of a salacious bit of footage that finds the sibling taking his incestuous obsession a few steps too far. When Daantje decides to stand up for herself and rebuff big brother’s advances, she opens herself up to some nasty surprises about the nature of their childhood bond. Robert Jan Westdijk’s film is shot in a daringly experimental first-person style that lends a unique candor to the proceedings. If you can look past the fact that Kooten’s supposed to be boffing her bro, there’s much to admire in her torrid love scene.
