Mechanical malfunction is the bane of the industrial age. Whether due to planned obsolescence, natural wear and tear, or damage from misuse or accident, modern man's machines are continually disappointing him. The situation is grave enough when a car breaks down or a toaster flares up, but what about when labor-saving robots go on a killing rampage, cutting down the very flesh-and-blood masters they were created to protect and coddle? The law-enforcement officer of futuristic message film Runaway (1984) is given the task of troubleshooting these rebel automatons and reducing hard-wired evil incarnate to a bucketful of harmless nuts and bolts.
