Almost anyone who has been an awkward teenager can still feel the emotional torment caused by being a sneered upon outcast. The pain is worse for girls who are being ridiculed by the school’s dominant social group. If the resourceless misfit is further saddled with a mother who hammers home her adolescent feelings of inferiority, then you have the makings of a satisfying revenge-of-the-weirdo flick. Mirror, Mirror (1990) tosses in a magic mirror that enables its embattled heroine to exact her gruesome and satisfying vengeance against the cruel-to-be-cool kids. The flick also includes highly committed and arch performances from 1970s-indie icon Karen Black and Yvonne DeCarlo (Mom on The Munsters).
