Chinese drama Summer Palace (2006) serves up a heady brew of sexuality and skinternational politics. Yu Hong (Lei Hao) is a village girl living in Beijing who strikes up a complicated romance with fellow student Zhou Wei (Xiaodong Guo) in the midst of the political unrest of the 1980s. Zhou leaves China for Berlin, where he witnesses the end of communism and returns home to reunite with Yu in the small town where she now lives. Amidst all this sweeping political drama, it's all too easy to lose sight of the true political prisoners: the cans and cantaloupes of the constrictively clothed Chinese women.
