Many American moviehounds don’t realize it, but while Michael Douglas and Glenn Close were collecting plaudits for their performances in Fatal Attraction (1987), a sleazier, more ribald version of the film was already available on video in Europe. Made a year before the Hollywood crowd-pleaser, La Gabbia (1985) covers similar terrain in relating the story of an obsessive beauty (Laura Antonelli) who seeks revenge on the blustering womanizer (Tony Musante) who humps and dumps her. Clad in black-lace lingerie, Antonelli dazzles Musante even as she schemes for his demise. Toss in sizzling supporting turns by Blanca Marsillach and Cristina Marsillach, and you’ve got a sexy thriller that makes its Hollywood equivalent look like milquetoast.
