Before there was Uma Thurman in Kill Bill (2003), there was Jeanne Moreau as “The Bride”--a.k.a. Julie Kohler--in François Truffaut’s amazing revenge flick The Bride Wore Black (1968). The Bride first tries suicide after her new husband is killed on her wedding day. Then she gives herself (and us) a reason to live by deciding to kill the men who murdered the unlucky groom. Oh, and she’s going to sexually enslave them too--because, after all, that’s what her dead husband would have wanted. It’s sure as hell what we want, and nobody’s disappointed.
