A warm and engulfing French comedy of movie-making and communal dining, Irma Vep (1996) explores the insecurities and affections of a troupe of Parisian cinema pros whose long-established relationships are subtly altered by the introduction of a beautiful and exotic newcomer. Gorgeous slip of Asian perfection Maggie Cheung is a natural knockout as the Chinese ringer who has been imported to help salvage the career of a formerly important film director whose arc is in decline. Maggie becomes an object of suspicion, of desire, of last hopes. Everybody pitches in to prepare some great meals.
