A hack director flubs nearly every aspect of an auspicious film shoot in the sweet-natured Dutch comedy De Boekverfilming (1999). Eddy Terstall directs and stars in the meta-filmic romp, distributed internationally as Based on the Novel. Terstall’s clever bid to lift the curtain on the frustrations and obstructions of filmmaking may fall on deaf ears, however, since he captures a world where a schlub with a camera is allowed to spend his days and nights with a trio of jaw-dropping actresses. Alette Dirkse, Nadja Hüpscher, and Femke Lakerveld play the scantily clad trifecta with verve to spare.
