A European family is ripped apart by intrigue and stolen jewels in the unorthodox Belgian thriller Princesses (2000). At the center of the tangled plot is Johan (Johan Leysen), a graying patriarch who has three daughters by two different women. When Johan comes into possession of some fenced diamonds, his ex-wife is suspected of the crime. Her husband, in turn, murders her in a fit of anger, prompting Johan to head on the run so as to escape the confused lunatic. Before long, Johan’s daughters are dragged into the caper, and they criss-cross Europe by plane, train, and automobile in an effort to protect their father and recover the jewels. One of the daughters, played by Emma de Caunes, is at one point so stressed by the hubbub that she takes time out to take a soak in the tub. She’s even thoughtful enough to let her plump breasts bob on the surface of the bathwater.
