Loosely based on the ancient Greek legend of Orpheus and Eurydice, Mika Kaurismäki’s zany Baltic road movie Honey Baby (2003) is an offbeat meditation on desire and destiny. An American musician crosses paths with a Russian bride-on-the-run, and together the doomed lovers embark on a free-spirited jaunt across Europe. Realizing too late that their future has already been cast for them, the pair bids a tearful adieu before the guitar-slinger heads into the underworld to retrieve his one true love. Henry Thomas is stellar in the lead role, though it’s “Honey Baby” Irina Björklund who really steals the show by flashing her assets during an epic boff session.
