A handsome African refugee and a frumpy, lovelorn German woman are the quirky Romeo and Juliet of the idiosyncratic German comedy Mein unbekannter Ehemann (1994). Desperate to secure a green card for her African friend Farouk (Ade Sapara), beautiful Claudia (Jeanette Arndt) suggests that he get hitched with her eager, heavyset friend Britta (Sabine Urig). Their uneasy coupling fluctuates between a marriage of convenience and a partnership based on genuine affection. It’s a sweet story, made even more so by the fact that the actresses embellish their differences by shedding their clothing (the advantage indisputably goes to Arndt).
