Review

The Informant is a straight-to-Showtime feature about “The Troubles” (Which are quite often referred to as such in the film…) in Ireland between the Catholics and Protestants, et al.

For being a made-for-cable flick, this movie sure does boast some heavyweights. Alright, some light heavyweights… Alright, welterweights. In any case, it was directed by Jim McBride of Great Balls of Fire and The Big Easy fame and features Cary Elwes and Timothy Dalton in two prominent roles. Not too shabby for a feature that never saw the lights of a cinematic debut…

The movie’s about an IRA soldier (Anthony Brophy) who spends a decade in prison and is thus a bit on the apprehensive side about getting back into all that fun “killing people” stuff when he’s released. However, upon the cajoling of his chums, Brophy tackles a “mission” and is promptly caught. Gee. Didn’t see that one coming…

Elwes is the one who caught him and ends up befriending him in the time before his trial. Dalton is the tough-guy cop who convinces Brophy to turn State’s evidence and rat out his pals in the IRA. Lots of intrigue, action and Brogue ensue.

All in all, it’s not all that bad. The acting’s well above par for a made-for-cable flick and the scenery (Shot entirely in Dublin…) is outstanding. The story’s a bit convoluted but easy enough to follow, even for those who know next-to-nothing about “The Troubles…” C+

Nudity Report: Danish dame Simone Bendix shows off every inch of her incredible body during a scene with her boyfriend Elwes that has absolutely nothing to do with the plot. They must have had to fill some sort of gratuitous nudity contract clause for Showtime…

Critics’ Vote: Apollo gave it a 71/100. Fair, to be sure.

IMDb Summary: A heavy-handed 5.7/10.

Box Office: If you pay for cable, then someone has one of your nickels…
