Hesher (Joseph Gordon-Leavitt) is a stoner, a glue-sniffer, a wasteoid and a headbanger. He’s also a mentor to TJ (Devin Brochu), a kid who's still reeling from the death of his mother a few months back. TJ meets the long-haired Hesher as he’s angrily destroying shit at a construction site; Hesher also loves destroying shit (particularly burning it), so he follows TJ to school. Hesher also makes himself at home at TJ’s house, which he shares with his depressed, pill-popping dad (Rainn Wilson) and his absent-minded grandmother (Piper Laurie). Hesher uses his unique brand of heavy-metal therapy to help TJ rebuild his confidence and self-esteem, striking up a friendship with beautiful supermarket cashier Nicole (Natalie Portman) along the way.

Natalie Portman puts on mousy drag for her role as Nicole, but she gives away a bit of her superstar sex appeal 11 minutes in, when we get a prurient peek down her blouse as she breaks up a fight. Can you bang your head and bang your fist at the same time?
