Screenwriter/director/leading lady Cheryl Dunye is also bald, black, and beautiful as a lesbian documentarian seeking out a popular 1930s character actress known as The Watermelon Woman (1996). Dunye’s delving soon reveals that the older actress also enjoyed her own lesbian (and interracial) relationship with a famous white starlet. That history soon reflects on Cheryl’s own life, as she begins an affair with white gal pal Guinevere Turner. It’s an amazing tale of women coming to grips with their heritage, even as Cheryl and Guinevere have you coming to your own grip.
