Likened to a real-life Rear Window (1954), Nicholas Barker’s fascinating documentary Unmade Beds (1997) peers at the lives of four New York City singles from a vantage point outside their apartment windows. A gruff and unlovable screenwriter, a comely gold-digger, a super-short bachelor, and an overweight lonely heart round out the real-life cast of Barker’s unique blend of documentary and fiction filmmaking. The lengths these singles go to to hook the right catch can be pretty remarkable, but it’s awfully fun to watch them work. Brenda Monte isn’t shy about addressing the camera about her dating woes while rubbing oil all over her glorious natural mams.
