An Orthodox Jewish woman struggles to find spiritual answers to carnal questions in the French religious-romantic drama La Petite Jérusalem (2005). Fanny Valette stars as Laura, an eighteen-year-old Jewish woman living in a suburb of Paris dubbed “Little Jerusalem.” Laura’s serious-minded study of the Torah and western philosophy have forced her to come to the conclusion that love is illusory, but the constant presence of her Algerian Muslim co-worker (Hedi Tillette de Clermont Tonnerre) is giving her romantic pangs. Fortunately the heroine eventually caves to her baser instincts, and it isn’t long before she’s exploring her sexuality with gusto. Also not to be missed is the sensational Elsa Zylberstein, who plays Laura’s sister as a nubile tart who experiences a sexual awakening at the local bathhouse.
