Two cousins weather the daily grind at their uncle’s furniture store in the Bronx in the quirky independent comedy Jose’s Place (2006). Chiko Mendez and Jon Arthur star as Jose and Raul, two working-class schlubs battling marital spats, money troubles, and insurmountable angst. Circumstances change considerably, however, when the storeowner gets trucked off to fight in Iraq, leaving the family business in the wholly incapable clutches of the cousins. When a greedy developer moves in on the lot, it’s up to Jose and Raul to stop their precious store from becoming a Polish disco hall. Z. Winston Brown’s flick is stuffed with gags but very little skin. A reveal by Tara Ashleigh in the opening credits is the only flesh that flies.
