Even before pictures could talk, they could arouse. Case in point, the classic sci-fi Metropolis (1927). Fritz Lang’s film is set around the year 2000 where an upper class lives in opulence while a literal underclass toils in the bowels of a vast subterranean workshop. Brigitte Helm plays a saintly character with a robotic doppelganger built to be nothing but evil. Well, not only evil, she’s erotic too, as Brigitte’s image is copied right down to her nearly topless dance number. It’ll do a number on you.
