Rent (2005), a movie based on the award-winning Broadway musical, follows the lives of a group of bohemian artists living in the East Village of New York. The title is based on the idea that you watch them as they attempt to, well, pay their rent, but there is much more going on. Love, sacrifice, art, and the AIDS epidemic are all major themes. This was a countercultural landmark in a time when musicals were dominated by Andrew Lloyd Webber. There’s very little nudity, but Idina Menzel gives us a brief but wicked view of half of her rumpus room.
