Based on a disturbing true story, Newton Thomas Sigel’s Point of Origin (2002) charts the desperate efforts of a tough-nosed arson investigator (Ray Liotta) to capture an unhinged pyromaniac. SoCal detective John Orr (Liotta) is a legend in his field—a shrewd detective with an uncanny knack for nailing down the backstory behind the city’s biggest blazes. With a fawning apprentice (John Leguizamo) in tow, Orr sets out to discover who’s been torching buildings from L.A. to the Central Valley. What he discovers is heat of a different variety, as femmes fatale Bai Ling, Illeana Douglas, and Nora Zehetner throw gasoline on the fire in his pants.
