Review
A Best Picture Oscar went to this exceptional mystery story about a black Philadelphia cop and his experiences with racial bigotry while helping the Sparta, Mississippi, police force solve a murder. Poitier is Virgil Tibbs, a savvy police detective whose assistance to the small town and captain Steiger is ill-rewarded and unappreciated. Both actors are excellent, and Steiger won an Oscar for Best Actor as the racist policeman trying to do right.
