The fact-based crime drama What Doesn't Kill You (2008) tells the story of Brian (Mark Ruffalo) and Paulie (Ethan Hawke), lifelong pals who drift into the life of crime under the tutelage of a gangster named Pat (Brian Goodman) in south Boston. As the pair tries to break free of Pat’s control, Brian, who is married to Amanda Peet, becomes a cocaine addict and winds up doing time in prison before returning to the neighborhood and trying to stay straight.
