Paradise Road (1997) is a different kind of women’s prison movie. First off, it’s not exploitative, there’s no lesbo warden or catfights, but there is a shower scene. The period piece tells of the real-life POWs imprisoned by the Japanese during WWII in Singapore. Though they are in a concentration camp, their spirits are not broken and they even organize a voice orchestra, much to the resistance of the guards. Another reason to sing about this production is the aforementioned shower scene where Anita Hegh shows off her hoots and Pamela Rabe displays both boobs and bush. Cate Blanchett doesn’t wash but still looks good in her dirty rags. She’d look better if she bathed, but that’s a small criticism for such a powerful movie.
