Theatrical productions are hotbeds of lofty speechifying and histrionic acting-out from attention-starved hams who will stop at no lengths to keep all eyes on them. Actor/writer/director John Turturro’s Illuminata (1998) plunges into the milieu of stagecraft and ego-driven thespians for a stylish and richly lensed fable of artistic ambition. At least four of Illuminata’s female leads are ambitious enough to flash the slip of nip and round mound of breast in the pursuit of high art. Dedicated diva Susan Sarandon’s mighty milkers make a massive impression from behind a gauze curtain.
