In the 1990s Japanese horror films chilled the world via hits such as Ringu (1998), Ju-on (2000), and the pioneering frightener Kokkuri (1997). On the advice of their favorite radio personality, teenaged friends Mio (Ayumi Yamatsu), Hiroko (Hiroko Shimada), and Masami (Moe Ishikawa) consult a Kokkuri board--Japan's version of our own Ouija--to learn what boys like them, how they will do in school, and which girl will die first. Of course, the board gives them more information than they could have ever wanted to know. As with many scare flicks that explore this theme, the message of Kokkuri is simple, but powerfully laid bare: Be careful what you witch for!
