If a person sustains enough punches to the head, time itself is wacked out of joint, and reality is a series of intersecting orbits, much like the delivery of information in the narrative of Détective (1985). Revered French director Jean-Luc Godard pays reverence to Hollywood glamour and tragedy with this classy, dramatic noir set in a fancy French vacation hotel. Gangsters and boxers and hard-edged, gorgeous molls combine with the elements of money hunger, murder, and emotional mayhem to create a modern-day fable that is at all times sad, tough, and sweet.
