A critically acclaimed tragicomedy from a Palm d’Or winning filmmaker, Emir Kusturica’s Zivot je cudo (2004) is a ribald farce set against the backdrop of the Balkan wars. When Serbian railroad worker Luka (Slavko Stimac) finds out that his son has been kidnapped, he agrees to receive a pretty blonde Muslim hostage (Natasa Solak) to serve as the boy’s ransom. Things get complicated, however, when Luka falls for the young woman and sacrifices his family’s safety (and sanity) to consummate his affection. It’s hard to fault the naïve brute--Solak’s an irresistible presence, particularly when she’s gyrating her torso with gusto.
