The dialogue’s the same, but the setting is wildly different in Baz Luhrmann’s Oscar-nominated modernization of the Shakespearean classic Romeo + Juliet (1996). Nineties teen icons Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes play the star-crossed lovers in modern-day Verona Beach, where the Montagues and the Capulets are locked in a bloody, bullet-ridden feud. By blending the Bard’s original verse with vivid set pieces and explosive action, Luhrmann delivers a screen adaptation that can actually keep junior-high-school students awake in class. Of course, attentive teachers will probably have to fast-forward right through the choicest bits––namely the scenes where Danes and costar Diane Venora flash shapely breasts and buns.
