Boarders at an Amsterdam apartment building weather the highs and lows of tenement life in the gritty social drama Van geluk gesproken (1987). Director Pieter Verhoeff assembles a motley ensemble cast for his colorful peek at life in a lower-middle-class region of the Netherlands. From siblings who split a flat to a resourceful single mother who works multiple shifts to feed her kids, all of the characters in Verhoeff’s film rely on their instincts and the sweat of their brows to get by. There are plenty of Dutch draws in this lively social tapestry, but it’s hot brunette Mirjam Sternheim who walks away with the trophy. Mirjam struts around the slum with effusive verve, treating her boyfriend to views of her sensationally toned bod.
