Literature and movies can make excellent bedfellows, especially when a short story by Russian drollery master Anton Chekhov is wed to the acerbic insight of English dry wit wonder John Cleese to produce a whimsical and poignant brief film such as Romance with a Double Bass (1974). Young music lovers who conceive of a bass being the size of an electric guitar must expand their conception of the instrument to include a large and cumbersome stringed apparatus built to the bulk of about three cellos. Bearing such largeness in mind, the notion of an itinerant musician concealing a naked princess within the case of his double bass makes all the sense in the world. As does the fact that they would fall in love on her wedding day.
