Reminiscent of Capturing the Friedmans (2003), Mick Jackson’s made-for-TV police procedural Indictment: The McMartin Trial (1995) explores the way in which a family’s reputation is destroyed by allegations of child molestation. After an overeager social-services employee coaxes false testimonials from students at a school for infants, the McMartin family begins a hellish tour of America’s courtrooms and penitentiaries. James Woods delivers a bravura performance as the edgy DA enlisted to defend the family against long odds, but it’s co-stars Roberta Bassin and Shirley Knight who give the most tantalizing turns in front of the camera, peeling off their layers for a pair of memorable reveals.
