It is easy enough to view television as a scary, soul-deadening, brain-numbing wasteland while sitting on the sofa and watching it from across the room. Imagine then the trials and trepidations of the beleaguered young hero of Viewer Discretion Advised (1998), a sad sap who confesses to his psychiatrist that his life has come to resemble a series of randomly chosen episodes from the boob tube. The truth is that not only does his life seem like recurring blocks of televised inanity, he has actually been sucked into the cathode box! What misery this mook must endure--popping up in a horror flick, in game shows, in the barren netherworld of late-’90s cable-channel offerings, and in any number of sanity-assaulting commercials. The doomed loser should take solace that his suffering provides such great amusement to the rest of us.
