Review

Colombian director Jorge Echeverry follows up his soccer-themed comedy Maximum Penalty (2001) with Malamor (2003), the coming-of-age story of a young tart who’s obsessed with her would-be stepfather. Determined to win the heart of her mother’s lover, Hache (Gustavo Angarita), Lisa (Cristina Umaņa) hatches a scheme that’s consequences are more disastrous than even the most cynical viewer could imagine. Echeverry’s film is translated as Bad Love, and by the film’s close, the title looks like a grievous understatement. Umaņa’s character doesn’t live to see the credits, but she’s a joy to watch while she’s still breathing, tempting her would-be lover with a reckless lack of self-regard.
