In the rich period drama Wah-Wah (2005), critically acclaimed screen actor Richard E. Grant gazes back on his atypical childhood in Swaziland. Grant’s semi-autobiographical directorial debut stars Zachary Fox as Ralph Compton, the adolescent son of bickering British colonialists whose dysfunctional existence unfolds in a distant African outpost. From catching his mom (Miranda Richardson) in bed with a family friend to hearing that his divorced dad has just married a bubbly airline stewardess (Emily Watson), poor Ralph seems perpetually confused by his family’s sorry state. If he could only take solace in local British beauties like the scantily clad Julie Walters, perhaps Ralph could find the silver lining in his own cloudy coming-of-age tale.
