Mexican director Gilberto Martínez Solares borrows liberally from Hitchcock in Los Gatos de las azoteas (1988), a steamy, suspenseful, south-of-the-border thriller. Based loosely on Rear Window (1954), the plot concerns a voyeuristic apartment dweller who monitors the comings and goings of his fellow tenants. When he observes a beautiful young woman being abducted, the peeping creep is forced into divulging his habit for the good of the victim. The kidnapping comprises the main thrust of Solares’s narrative, but he allows for plenty of other thrusting as well--the peeping tom does manage to catch neighbors Yirah Aparicio, Michelle Mayer, Rossy Mendoza, Angelica Ruiz, and Laura Tovar in some pretty delightfully compromising situations.
