Review

One great thing about wars of yore is that once a conflict has slipped a few decades into the past it becomes grist for a bracing and cheery romantic musical comedy along the lines of Darling Lili (1970). Wondrous warbler Julie Andrews headlines as a World War I German spy. Craggy stag Rock Hudson is the American flying ace whose dazzling charms lure Andrews into a love so pure that she switches allegiances from the Bosch to the Yanks. Darling Lili has singing, dancing, laughs, and tugging heartstrings, all set in Paris and pulsating to a Henry Mancini beat. Thanks to the vision of director Blake Edwards, global conflict has never before or since provided such all-around slapdash entertainment.
