A strange cyst on a young woman’s back turns out to be the reincarnated spirit of a Satanic 400-year-old American Indian medicine man in the spooky occult horror flick The Manitou (1977). Karen Tandy (Susan Strasberg) isn’t prepared for the bump on her back to grow into a demonic monster that can only be snuffed out by a South Dakota-dwelling shaman (Michael Ansara). Fortunately Tandy’s tarot-card-reading flame (Tony Curtis) spots the danger early and calls Ansara in for the Manichean showdown. William Girdler’s film is way out there, but Strasberg’s topless reveal should help bring male viewers back to earth.
