Whenever corrupted conceptions of professional ethics and crudely compromised moral character are discussed by men of honesty and perception, lawyers come in for a lot of abuse, and rightfully so. The attorney hero of Justice (2004) wants to change the widely held and generally accurate public perception of his ilk, and he does so by standing up for fair play and equal representation within the court system. Public defender Carter is that oddest of anomalies to be found in the halls of justice--a principled man, plagued with both a conscience and a backbone. When he straightens his posture for the good of the downtrodden, he jeopardizes his career, his family, and--unless he is very, very careful--his freedom itself.
