Review
Alfred Hitchcock's Frenzy (1972) is now available on DVD, in one of a confusing myriad of boxed sets. They seem to be releasing all of Hitchcock's films, each boxed set with one DVD of the Alfred Hitchcock Presents TV show.
Unfortunately, should you want all of the TV show DVDs, you will duplicate several of the films buying all of the sets, and the TV show DVDs are not sold separately. Frenzy is a thriller about a "necktie murderer," who rapes then strangles women in London.
A former RAF officer turned barman, Richard Blaney, becomes the prime suspect when his ex is murdered. There is not as much suspense or tension as is typical of Hitchcocks work, as we know early on who the guilty party is, and there is far more humor than usual, but the rape/strangulation scenes are graphic enough.
Nudity Report: I was able to cap breasts from Barbara Leigh-Hunt, the murdered ex-wife, when I did the VHS version, but was unable to get anything useful of Anna Massey, who played the girlfriend. Thanks to DVD, we now have dark but clear full-frontal of her. There is also incidental unknown exposure from a body seen floating at the start of the film, and a last "ripped whore" near the end. This was Hitchcocks next to last film, and proved that he still had it.
I give it a solid B.
Critics Vote: Leonard Maltin is nearly orgasmic over this film at 3 1/2 stars.
IMDB Summary: 7.3 out of 10.
