While scratching in a hospital with an extreme case of psoriasis in The Singing Detective (2003), novelist Dan Dark (Robert Downey Jr.) decides to rewrite his first book in his head. Paranoid with a high fever and prone to breaking out in patches of itchy skin and song, Dan believes himself to be his protagonist: a private dick desperate to solve the case of the slaying of a prostitute in 1950s Los Angeles.
